Where can I find my UTR number?
Your UTR or Unique Tax Reference number is a 10 digit number issued to your business by HMRC. This number can be found on various correspondence from HMRC including:
- A notice to file a Tax Return
- A previous Tax Return
- A statement of account or payment reminder
- Your online Tax Account

If you are a Limited Company and you have lost your UTR number you can request your Corporation Tax UTR number here.
HMRC - Ask for a copy of your UTR number
For sole traders or partnerships you will need to contact the Self Assessment helpline.
New businesses
For Limited liability companies the UTR number is typically posted out by HMRC within 2 weeks of your incorporation date, this happens automatically.
If you applying for VAT or PAYE registration and you are a sole trader or partnership and have not yet registered for Self Assessment, you must do this first in order to receive a UTR number.
